Hexagram 64

Vincent Cheung

The Sakurajima volcano in Kagoshima, Japan, has a number of eruptions of various sizes every year, leaving behind a large amount of volcanic ash and gravel. ‘Hexagram 64’ is made from these natural and environmentally friendly materials combined with palm wax. The designer hopes to bring people closer to nature, therefore incorporating volcanic ash into daily goods, so that people are aware of the volcano’s existence every day through touch and feel. The design is inspired by Taiji in the Book of Changes. Seen from above, the wash basin has a comma shape, depicting both yin and yang. When the water flows into the basin, it is as unpredictable as life itself.
