TERMS & CONDITIONS OF THE RADO STAR PRIZE Canada 2019
The Rado Star Prize Canada 2019 organized by The Swatch Group Canada (“Swatch Group Canada”) in its capacity as Official Sponsor of IDS Vancouver 2018 & Toronto 2019. The Rado Star Prize Canada 2019 aims to support a design student/non-professional designer in starting a career in design in Canada. The scope of the competition is to create a design project in the field of Product or Industrial Design. We are looking for innovative ideas to use new materials in the field of items for everyday life. The material, the look or the design of the object should be a tribute to the theme of DESIGN INSPIRED BY NATURE.
The competition offers two prizes:
1. The Jury Prize (Winner of Rado Star Prize Canada)
- A cash prize of $5’000 CAD
- A presentation of the winning project on Rado’s website and social media channels
- A Rado watch (the watch is not redeemable for cash and cannot be exchanged); Valued at the discretion of Swatch Group Canada
- Economy airfare and two-night hotel accommodation for winner should he/she live outside the Toronto area, with a per diem for meals and transportation.
2. PRIX DU PUBLIC Prize
- A Rado watch (the watch is not redeemable for cash and cannot be exchanged)
9 finalists and the winner of the Rado Star Prize Canada 2019 will be selected by a specialist jury.
All finalists will have the opportunity to display their Projects during the IDS Toronto Show in January 2019 and join an online vote award (PRIX DU PUBLIC PRIZE) which will be running on http://radostarprize.rado.com/canada
General terms and conditions
No purchase or payment of any kind is necessary to participate in or win the Rado Star Prize Canada 2019 competition.
- Must be over 18 years of age and resident of the Canada.
- May not be a professional designer but rather studying a design discipline or otherwise aiming to become a designer
- May only enter one design
- Group or collaborative entries will not be accepted.
All designs must be the original work of the Participant. Designs cannot be previously commercialized.
Employees of Rado, of any of Rado’s affiliates and of commissioned agents and agencies, employees of IDS as well as persons living in the same household with such employees are not eligible to enter this competition nor are they allowed to carry out, assist or consult in any way an entry to the competition. Similarly, relatives of a jury member (including but not restricted to design firms, teams, family members etc.) are not eligible to take part in the competition. Any such persons entering will be immediately disqualified from the competition.
The jury, made up of professionals from the world of design and from Rado Watch Co. Ltd., will evaluate the designs submitted and select the nine finalists, as well as the winner of the competition. Swatch Group Canada reserves the right to substitute a member of the jury due to illness or unavailability.
While Swatch Group Canada will be the point of contact between the Participants and the jury, Swatch Group Canada will ensure that any identifiable data of entrants will not be disclosed to the jury prior to the announcement of the ten finalists and the eventual winner of the Jury Prize. Thus, all judging decisions will be anonymous.
Swatch Group Canada will further ensure that jury decisions are made according to the deadlines set and to the criteria stated, but will not interfere in any way in the judging process or decisions. The jury’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. No information about the jury’s decision or deliberation process will be made public.
For the Jury Prize competition, the website will be open for submissions from Thursday, September 13, 2018 and the closing date for entries is Friday, November 9, 2018 at midnight Toronto (GMT -4).
Prix du Public prize
All 10 finalists including the Jury Prize Winner to the Rado Star Prize Canada 2019, chosen by the Jury, will enter automatically in the public vote award (PRIX DU PUBLIC PRIZE) procedure. This voting will take place on http://radostarprize.rado.com/canada. The finalist receiving the most votes from the public will receive the PRIX DU PUBLIC Prize.
The PRIX DU PUBLIC vote will be opened from November 15, 2018 to January 15, 2019.
Entry process and requirement
To enter the competition each Participant must visit the Rado Star Prize Canada website and submit:
- Their name, address, email address and a short biography
- The field of design of the project, a short description of the project
- Up to 4 visuals / technical drawings / concept ideas of the project
Participants not fulfilling these Terms and Conditions as well as those entering a false name or address may be disqualified.
Projects will be accepted from the following fields of design:
Product design, Graphic design, Industrial design, Interior design, Lighting design.
Any Project needs to be a tribute to the topic of DESIGN INSPIRED BY NATURE. The materials, look or design of the object should be a tribute to the theme of functional design for daily use with materials, textures, inspiration derived from nature. Accordingly, any design incorporating a design for a watch or other timepiece will not be accepted or considered.
Swatch Group Canada will be responsible for the safety of all submissions received and will confirm receipt via email with an individual reference number. Submissions can be made electronically only and as such will not be returned to the Participant.
Swatch Group Canada is not responsible for disappointment suffered by any person not being able to take part in the competition for technical reasons outside of Rado’s control (e.g.: insufficient internet access at the private/public place from which a person wishes to submit their entry) and Swatch Group Canada will not be liable for entries into the competition that are lost, misdirected, delayed or corrupted, for technical reasons or otherwise.
The winner of the Jury prize will be notified by email in November 2018 and will be announced using their first and last name with their winning design 1) on the Rado Star Prize website, 2) on rado.com 3) on Rado’s Official Facebook Page 4) via Rado Twitter 5) via Rado Instagram.
The winner of the PRIX DU PUBLIC Prize will be notified by email in January 2019 and will be announced using their first and last name with their winning design 1) on the Rado Star Prize website, 2) on rado.com 3) on Rado the Official Facebook Page 4) via Rado Twitter 5) via Rado Instagram.
If a winner is not reachable or does not reply to the prize notification within 7 (seven) days, the prize will be forfeited and awarded to another entrant selected by the jury.
Prizes are not transferable and no alternative prizes or cash equivalent are available.
Publicity and reproduction of images/project information
Participant is aware that by uploading his/her design to the Rado Star Prize website that any third party may have access to the design and could use it unlawfully. Swatch Group Canada cannot control such unlawful third party use. Participant waives any right to claim from Swatch Group Canada damages for any third party use.
By submitting their design, Participants confirm that they are the authors of such designs. In addition, Participants confirm that their design does not show any content that is otherwise unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory or vulgar, or which infringes any trademark, copyright, design or other right of any third party. Participants will hold Swatch Group Canada and its officers, employees and affiliates harmless from and against any losses, claims, damages and costs resulting from any violation of these terms.
Participants whose entries do not comply with the above terms or which are rude, abusive or deemed otherwise unsuitable will be excluded from the competition.
The intellectual property rights of the design shall remain the property of the Participant. It is the responsibility of the Participants to protect the intellectual property of his/her design before entering the competition if deemed necessary. Swatch Group Canada will not be liable for infringement of any intellectual property of third parties once the designs are in the public domain.
By submitting their design, all Participants – including those not selected as finalists or winners – grant Swatch Group Canada the right to use their entry for marketing purposes only without granting Swatch Group Canada any right to change or reproduce the design. This right of use will begin on the day the winners are announced and will continue for 10 (ten) years. Irrespective of Swatch Group Canada’s right to use the entries for marketing purposes in relation to the Rado Star Prize, the prize money does not include remuneration for the use of the Participant’s intellectual property rights.
Winners may, without any obligation, be asked to take part in or co-operate with publicity, which may include the publication of their name and/or image.
Swatch Group Canada reserves the right to amend these rules at any time, and to modify, suspend or terminate the competition in the event that it becomes infected by a computer virus or otherwise technically impaired.
